SSFTA Spring BBQ & Potluck - 5/3/14

The sky is clear, the birds are chirping, and if you look real hard, the hills in the foothills are green! It must be time for the  the SSFTA Spring Barbecue and Potluck! Get your bike cleaned and your favorite side dish prepared for our BBQ potluck on Saturday, May 3, 2014, at Lake Ming! Look for the club booth near the campground entrance, where we had our October Halloweenie Roast.

We will start the day with two group rides rolling out from the Lake Ming parking lot at 9:00am. We will have two ride leaders and sweepers for the intermediate and casual groups. The club will be providing hamburgers, hot dogs, and drinks, which should all be ready by the time the two groups get back! Bring your bike, family, and your favorite side dish to share at this family friendly event!

Contact the club at if you have any questions and join the facebook event to keep up with any updates.

SSFTA Road Rides - Thursdays

We are all about cross training (or just mixing up the social fun) so come join us Thursday evenings for a road ride.  No pressure to wear spandex and go ahead and throw on that Camelback and helmet visor!  Just leave the mountain bike at home and bring/borrow something with skinny tires.  Ride starts from Thorner Elementary at 6:00 p.m. and will be lead by Eddie Gonzalez! Lights are suggested as the ride will be rolling back into the parking lot close to dusk. The route will include the bike path and back through Hart Park and will be about 20 miles long.  Route may be altered some days.  As with our mountain bike rides, no one gets dropped.

Email the club if you have any questions.

Kern River Duathlon - 4/27/14

Do you like running before and after your ride? If so, join the Kern Wheelmen’s Kern River Duathlon on Sunday, April 27, 2014! Participants will start with a 2 mile run around Hart park before jumping on their bikes (preferably road bikes) for an 11 miles ride on Alfred Harrell. The excitement ends with a transition (possible cyclocross dismount) into the last 2 mile run section. Post-race drinks and refreshments will be provided by the Wheelmen for all participants and medals will be handed out at the park! Get registered at and support this awesome local event!

Edwards Air Force Base Trail Ride - 4/26/14

Hi everyone, Ernest here. I spoke with our ride leader who is also the same person who is working on getting us access to for our ride at Edwards Air Force Base on April 26, 2014. We currently have 26 guests attending this ride which is right about how many riders we can get on the base. I apologize for advertising the last day to make your decision on this ride as this Saturday, but we will have to stop taking reservations as of this afternoon (4/16/14). Please contact me if you have any questions. For those who have joined the Facebook event, please confirm that you will be going. We need to get names to the base as soon as possible and arrange personnel to escort us through the base.

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE! The only thing more fun than flying over the desert in an experimental fighter jet or attack helicopter is flying over the same area with our friends from Tehachapi Mountain Trails Association! The SSFTA has been invited to ride sections of Edwards Air Force Base on Saturday, April 26, 2014. The ride will take place over rocky and sandy terrain! All levels are welcome and the TMTA will be hosting rides for each riding level. Riders should feel confident traversing rocky sections and feel comfortable riding through sandy patches (much like the ones at Keyesville). Be sure to bring lots of water and flat fixings. No flight line photography is allowed, but we will be able to take pictures of the trails. More information will be shared by our ride leader, Steve Hansen, when we arrive on the base.
We will meet up at the Mesa Marin Chevron on HWY 178 and SR 184 at 7:00am to arrange carpools. One member of the base must be in each vehicle when entering the gate, so we will need to have as few vehicles driven out to the base as possible. We will then take the 58 freeway East to meet up with the crew from TMTA at the Starbucks on Tucker Rd. and W. Techachipi Blvd. by 8:00am. We will all then convoy over to Edwards and meet up before 9:00am to get ready to enter the gate.
Please contact the club if you have any questions and join the Facebook event for updates. RSVP-ing for this event is very important and can be done by email or Facebook. We want everyone who shows up to be able to get onto the base and ride!

Trail Skills College - 4/19/14

The Tehachipi Mountain Trails Association has organized a trail building clinic with CORBA this Saturday, April 19th, in Tehachipi! This is the perfect time to get trained for all things trail and get a glimpse of new places to ride!

I apologize for the late notice on our trail school/build day this Saturday April 19th! Steve Messer, the president of CORBA (Concerned Off Road Mountain Bike Association) has graciously agreed to teach the class based on the IMBA curriculum and will be here at the end of the week. We need you to show up and give your support to this please! If you are interested it will start at 8 am on Saturday again at the TVRPD office at 490 W D St, in West Park in the old day care building by the playground equipment. Send me an e-mail if you are coming so we have a head count for coffee and snacks. We will spend several hours in the classroom then head to lunch at Red House BBQ, again I need a head count so Mano can have a buffet ready and will give us reduced pricing on lunch. After lunch we will head up to the Lehigh Land and begin our field work portion of the class. Please wear long pants, long sleeved shirt, boots and sports glasses or safety glasses for eye protection. If you have gloves bring them. We have some but they are fairly big and a few safety glasses. If you have a favorite trail work tool, i.e. McLeod, pick-mattock, or Pulaski, bring it! Otherwise we will supply you with a tool for the day from some of the great supply of new tools Lehigh Cement purchased for us or from the tools donated by Rogue Hoe!
