It was good to see everyone last night at the meeting. Would be nice if we could some how get some fresh faces to the meetings, but that unfortunately rarely changes with any club? Sorry I cut out a bit early but my should was killing me and I just needed to get home and go to bed!

I personally would like to push the topic further with regards to the "club agenda" and "Why we should or could raise money for projects. Personally I think the "Bubby bubby let's just ride bikes and have fun is well and good!" But it seems like the club should expand it's place in the cycling community by having a bigger vision! Why not get aggressive with promoting the sport through juniourdevelopment, riding clinics for men and women, financial donations to IMBA, bike festivals and any number of great ideas!

Fund raising I believe could be done easily, professionally and in a controlled fashion with sponsors on the website and posibly jerseys? The sponsors could pay a flat yearly rate for a determined advertisement size or placement and it could also be pro-rated through the year? That way it's easier on the club to say on January 1st to change the sponsors?

Two words.....

BIKE PARK

Bakersfield kids are SCREAMING for things to do. Find out how they did it up in Fresno and model a plan after that.

A skills park would be awesome! A BMX track, a pump track and small trials section would be good!

It could be done if the right people get involved. Sponsor type stuff is always good. Get a few companies (bike related and local places) to put up cash for ad banners and billboard etc. I wish I had the time to front something like this. I would get it done! My job limits me (big-time) i'm gone on a moments notice.

I don't think we should underestimate what a GREAT thing is it to have an organization consisting of welcoming and friendly people dedicated to ensuring that there are organized mountain bike rides at least 3 times a week with regular "out of town" rides as a bonus. Perhaps it is because I am new to the area (just moved here in Oct) that I don't take this for granted. The vast majority of communities don't have any group attempting this....and if they do, it is usually a very "closed" group of existing friends with an small email list who are not very welcoming until someone proves they can ride. It is breath of fresh air to have rides organized for all abilities, and even more wonderful when the group tailors the ride to ensure everyone who comes to a ride or event is not left out, no matter their current ability. Most mountain bikers buy a bike for the first time with the greatest intentions of having fun by riding great trails, hanging with like minded friends and family, and get some much needed exercise. Too often, the reality is that they can't find the trails beyond the most obvious ones, can't get their friends and family to come out for a ride because they are "too busy", and the few people they find on the trails are into themselves or their small clique. This unfortunately usually leads to a dusty and rusting bike sitting in the garage while the owner moves on to somthing else. I can think of no better way to advocate for a sport than to make it very easy for ALL interested parties to participate, learn new trails, meet nice people, and feel good at the same time. SSFTA demonstrates all of this, and more. This is the club's core and in my humble opinion, we should never lose sight of that!

All that said, I do think that the club can, and should do more. I have my own personal opinion on that (i.e. more maintenance and support on the trails that we ride), but to me the issue goes way beyond "what else should we do". The real question is not WHAT we should do, but rather HOW are we going to do it and WHO is going to lead it. Since I first arrived here in October and started attending and volunteering for SSFTA events, it quicky became apparant that there are only 5-10 people who are doing 95% of the work. These 5-10 people are the few in the club who are actually committing to leading rides every week, organizing out of town rides, organizing club social events like BBQs and Xmas parties, orgainzing and participating in trail maintenance days, manning informational booths about SSFTA at local races and community events, loading up/transporting/and cleaning equipment, creating and updating information and pictues on our website and other materials, planning fundraising activities to pay for club activities, answering phone and email inquiries, communicating upcoming events to members and the public, managing membership, coordinating to get taxes done, paying the bills, soliciting and building meeting agendas, taking/editing/distributing meeting minutes, participating in montly meetings, and participating in sub-commitee work. It is very easy to underestimate the many hours these people dedicate to the "cause" (don't even get me started on the DAYS some of these same people put into volunteering to ensure the success of the recent Keyesville race). Remember, these same 5-10 people are all volunteers and receive no pay for their efforts. They have the same work and family obligations that everyone else does.

I guess my whole point is that if we are going to try to grow the club beyond the current activities, then the club needs to have additional people step-up and help carry the load. It is very easy for someone to come forward and say "the club should ..." and then sit back and expect others to do it since your life is busy. If you have an idea, passion for, and willingness to LEAD the effort, I am convinced that the SSFTA board, advisory committe, and membership will support you. Not only will they formally endorse the idea, I am sure that many of these same people will step up and help you along the way to ensure success. It is simply not reasonable to expect the current few active participants to carry even more of the burden just because another great idea is thrown out there.

Kevin

ps - FYI.. I am not a current board member or member of the advisory team. I am, however, a passionate club member who wants the club to continue to thrive. I hope you don't read this as trying to limit discussion or stop opinions on the clubs's future....I really do hope that we have much more input so that the club can achieve more for the benefit for all riders. I just think it is important for everyone to step back and seriously consider "what can I do for the for the club" rather than simply stating what more the "club" should do...

Very True Kevin, I've rode with SSFTA (in Spurts) for many years and love and enjoy where it is and what it has become right now. I feel guilty that I don't help out more, so I dont come up with suggestions for more obligations. I just give my praise and thanks to those 5 to 10 people that make this club what it is.

WRONG! I do agree with most of what you said, however.......
And to be honest the last club I was "in" laid the guilt trip on people and they were losing members left and right because of it. Be happy that "contributing" can be in the form of paying dues. If what you are saying is the clubs "official credo" count me out.

EricS,

My thoughts are my own and in no way official credo....as I said I am not a member of the board or advisory team.

My post was a reflection of what I have observed since I arrived here in October. I wasn't trying to lay a guilt-trip on anyone here, just stating the simple fact that if we want the club to do MORE than the current activities, then the club needs more people to be actively involved in planning and participation.

What the club is now is a great thing, and it is easy to underestimate and take for granted the hard work and commitment involved in doing the current level of activities. The current board, advisory committee, and active volunteers are giving an enormous amount of their time and energy just trying to keep the current core social and ride focus going. I think it would be AWESOME if the club is able to branch out and accomplish other things. To be realistic about it, however, I don't think it will happen successfully unless people step up and take ownership of the actual planning and execution of their own ideas.

Put it this way.......

I would love to do nothing more than devote at least 25% of MY time to mountainbiking. Hell, I would do 75% if it were up to me.....Well being within reason.

Anyway, wrong angle to take. I club (on the east coast) lose 1/2 it's due paying members all because a member kept ranting and raving about how the club's members weren't doing enough. Trust me it's not good to use the guilt trip, it may increase activity on the short term, but in the long run it will hurt the club.

I could not make the April meeting because it was already a long day for me due to med appts. It was my 1st outing on crutches and it took a lot out of me, but I'm curious if any of the stuff in this thread was discussed. Can anyone shed some light on how the meeting went and what was discussed?

Since I've worked for the County for many years now, I've made numerous contacts w/folks in other departments, including those who oversee County Parks and Recreation. Hopefully with the club's backing, I'd like to present the bike park idea to them sometime in the future. If anyone is interested I'd love to get a subcommittee going or if this was already discussed and planned, I'd like to participate. Additionally, one of the Probation programs I oversee is the Juvenile Court Work Program, therefore, I should be able to provide numerous hours of free labor since this would be a nonprofit community project. Count me in. Either way, I should have a little more time to commit to this since I can't ride for a significant period of time. Thoughts? Ideas?

Jeff, glad to hear you are beginning the healing process and starting to venture out of the house a little. There has been a lot of discussion recently about re-looking at the mission/goals of the SSFTA club, so the board decided to dedicate the May 11th meeting completely to this topic. The board is interested in hearing from the membership and everyone is welcome to come and share their views. Look for upcoming information on the website regarding this meeting. At the April meeting we learned that the Kernville Bike Park organization is having a hearing this Thursday 4/22 at 7:00 p.m. here in Bakersfield to approve the bike park there. Attending the hearing might be a good opportunity to not only support a semi-local bike park already moving forward in the process, but also learn how they are approaching it. Look on the SSFTA homepage and the kvbikepark.com website for more information. See you soon :) Kari

If you don't get the newspaper, get a copy of today's. It includes an ariticle on the BMX Nationals held in Bako this weekend as well as the lack of a Bike Park in town. The time is ripe to go after the Bike Park idea. I don't think I have the time to help w/it though... just kidding.

Kernville's bike park was approved with very little (and gentle) opposition and most community members were quite supportive. They got the chamber of commerce on board and used land that was already designated for public recreation - the rodeo grounds. Chris from kvbikepark.com has all the info on how they did it. Their park will be open in June.
